Ineke Selles, a nurse at the Matunka Center, discovered the nutritional and medicinal properties of the Moringa tree and decided to grow it as part of her local care program. Moringa powder, made from the leaves of Moringa tree, became an essential part of the treatment of patients, malnourished children and physically frail adults. Adding Moringa to the daily diet led to faster recovery and improved health, especially among diabetic patients. This inspired Jan Pruis to start a Moringa plantation in Malawi, with a focus on sustainable and organic agriculture.
“Our mission is to achieve sustainable development for Malawi's under privileged population. Teaching organic farming methods is key here.”
Under-privileged local farmers in Malawi (around 80% of the population) spend up to half of their income on expensive fertilisers, while they can save these costs if they know how to make their own fertile compost from available materials. We practice this way of sustainable of organic farming on our Moringa Plantation and we teach the local population through our School Feeding Programme.
“With sustainable, organic agriculture, we combat povertyand help improve food quality in Malawi.”
This programme helps schools sustainably grow their own foodfor a healthy school breakfast, in order to reduce malnutrition among the mostvulnerable children.
